The vast majority of health related mobile applications for smart phones are developed with direct input and feedback from those most likely to use them. With support from the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI), a customizable mobile app has been developed for smart phone use for stroke survivors (SS) specifically based on their feedback and needs. It provides resources, support groups, fitness & diet, scheduling, and "my medical information". The app was designed to consider age, gender, ethnicity, and race. Stroke Survivors can enter their personal data, and access National Stroke Association materials. The app also provides resources and websites for stroke related resources. The app allows a detailed listing of all medications and a reminder when to take them. Stroke survivors can enter contacts, including who to contact in an emergency and physicians. It defines common medical terms relevant to stroke and list physical, emotional, and cognitive conditions. It lists modifiable and non-modifiable stroke risk factors. It has special sections for “Am I having a stroke?” and “Send help message with my location”. The app was developed by a team of researchers from The National Stroke Association, The State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate Medical Center, City University of New York (CUNY), and The Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health.
